Colonel Schroer was born and raised in Northern Ohio and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 2000 upon completion of his degree in Engineering.
Following graduation from The Basic School, Colonel Schroer completed the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course and was assigned to duty at 2d Battalion, 10th Marines where he served as a Forward Observer; Fire Direction Officer, Battery F, Battalion Landing Team 2d Battalion 2d Marines, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU); and Liaison Officer/Fire Support Coordinator 3d Battalion 6th Marines (2001-2004).
Following his initial tour in the operating forces, Colonel Schroer was directed to lateral move and completed the Basic Communications Officer Course in 2004, reporting to MWCS-38 following graduation. At MWCS-38 Lieutenant Colonel Schroer Commanded HQ Company and Company A and served as the Operations Officer (2005-2007).
Colonel Schroer attended the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) completing a master’s degree in Space Systems Operations with the Armed Forces Communications Electronics award for best thesis and a Master’s Degree in Joint Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence with distinction (C4I). He also completed the Naval War College Distance Education Program with distinction (2007-2009) while at NPS.
Reporting to the newly established Marine Corps Information Operations Center (MCIOC), Colonel Schroer deployed with the first Information Operations Planning Team attached to I MEF (Fwd) serving as Special Technical Operations (STO) Chief and Military Deception Planner (2009-2011). Upon returning, Colonel Schroer served as the MCIOC Requirements Branch Head and STO Chief. Following MCIOC, Colonel Schroer was selected to attend Command and Staff College where he received a Master’s Degree in Military Operations graduating with distinction (2012-2013).
Reporting back to the operating forces, Colonel Schroer served as the 22d MEU S-6 deploying to USEUCOM and USCENTCOM over the course of a 10-month deployment. In 2015, Colonel Schroer was transferred to Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command and served as the Marine Raider Support Group S-6 and S-3 (2013-2017).
In 2017, Colonel Schroer was assigned as the Operations Officer, Marine Corps Cyberspace Operations Group, Marine Corps Forces Cyber Command and then selected for Command of Region 1, Marine Corps Embassy Security Group. Following a successful command tour in 2020, Colonel Schroer was selected to attend the National War College to complete a Master’s Degree in National Strategy where he graduated with distinction.
Colonel Schroer was assigned to the Joint Staff J39, Deputy Director of Global Operations in 2021 where he served as Special Project and Innovation Branch Chief, and Assistant Division Director (2021-2023) prior to reporting to IC4.
Colonel Schroer has participated in Operations DYNAMIC RESPONSE, ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF) 03, IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF) I, OIF 04/05, OEF 10/11, and INHERENT RESOLVE.
Colonel Schroer and his wife Krista have six children; Patrick (18), Molly (16), Maggie (14), Caroline (12), Daniel (10), and Christopher (10).
His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (x5), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (x2), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (1)
