The Armed Forces Communications-Electronics Association (AFCEA) Quantico-Potomac Chapter plans to award up to four (4) $1,000 scholarships in 2010 to outstanding students from the Stafford County Virginia area, including Marine Corps Base Quantico. The Chapter also plans to award up to one (1) $500 follow-on award to a qualified previous Chapter scholarship recipient. Subject to the availability of funds, scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled for the 2010/2011 academic year as full-time students in a course of study at an accredited four-year college or university that leads to a Bachelor’s degree in one of the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines that will prepare the student for a professional career supporting AFCEA’s focus on military communications, electronics, information technology, and intelligence systems.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
- Applicants must be graduating high school seniors.
- Applicants must be accepted for enrollment during the 2010/2011 academic year in a full-time course of study at an accredited four year college or university in the United States. Enrollment in distance learning programs does not meet this requirement.
- The applicant’s course of study must lead to a Bachelor of Science degree within four years of undergraduate study in one of the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines that will prepare the student for a professional career supporting AFCEA’s focus on military communications, electronics, information technology, and intelligence systems. Qualifying academic majors include, but are not limited to, Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, Communications, and Nuclear Engineering; Computer Science; Management Information Systems; Mathematics; and Physics.
- Eligible applicants include residents of Stafford County, Virginia, attending Stafford County High Schools, and dependents of active duty military personnel who attend Quantico Middle/High School.
- Applicants who have received appointments to military academies, four-year ROTC scholarships, or a scholarship or combination of scholarships from other organizations providing more than $10,000 in financial aid for the 2010/2011 academic year will not be eligible for AFCEA Quantico-Potomac Chapter Scholarships.
Scholarship Application Procedures
Scholarship application packages must be submitted by mail with postmarks dated no later than May 3, 2010, or via e-mail (preferred) in PDF format, not later than May 6, 2010. E-mailed applications should be sent to awardsscholarships@afcea-qp.org Applications received after midnight May 6, 2010 will not be considered. The required contents of the application package are fully described in the following pages of this document.
Selection: The Board of Directors of the AFCEA Quantico-Potomac Chapter will appoint a Scholarship Selection Committee composed of current Chapter members to review and rank applications on May 7, 2010. The Scholarship Committee Chairman will offer AFCEA Quantico-Potomac Chapter Scholarships to applicants in the order of their ranking by the selection committee up to the availability of scholarship funding. Applicants will be asked to confirm their continued eligibility for an award. In the event that a primary selectee does not confirm eligibility for an award, scholarships will be offered to alternate selectees. The Scholarship Committee Chairman will notify scholarship winners of their final selection for awards no later than May 11, 2010.
Award Procedures:
Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the Finance Office of the scholarship winner’s chosen college/university in the form of a check drawn on the AFCEA Quantico-Potomac Chapter Education Fund account. The Chapter will send representatives to the 2010 Academic Awards ceremonies at the students’ schools to recognize the students before an audience of their parents and peers. Those who do not receive their awards at a year-end academic awards ceremony will be invited to attend one of Chapter’s Monthly luncheon meetings to receive their awards.
