The chapter hosted an Industry Mixer on Thursday, December 3rd, with our invited keynote guest speaker Brigadier General Robert F. Hedelund, Commander Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, and Vice Chief, Naval Research. The event will was held at the Clubs at Quantico, Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA beginning at 3:00 PM. BGen Hedelund provided an overview of the role of the Warfighting Lab and discussed how industry can interact with his command to provide solutions to emerging requirements.

After the presentation and a question and answer period there was an industry hosted mixer for all attendees where we traded cards, stories, and discussed opportunities .

AFCEANS, in line with our plan to introduce you to the key C4 decision makers and knowledge base, we lined up BGen Stewart, USMC Intelligence Director (bio below) , as our guest speaker Wed, Sept 30. We were fortunate as this was the first opportunity for BGen Stewart to address industry since assuming his current role.  We received firsthand knowledge of BGen Stewart’s vision for the intelligence community and security in support of the Marine Corps.

Brigadier General Stewart received his baccalaureate degree from Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL, where he majored in History (1981). He also earned Masters Degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, Newport, RI (1994) and in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University, Washington, DC (2002).

His military education includes: The Basic School, Quantico, VA, (1981-82); The Armor Officer Basic Course, Fort Knox, KY, (1982); The Basic Communications Officer Course, Quantico, VA, (1985), The Cryptologic Division Officer’s Course, Washington, DC, (1986), The Amphibious Warfare School, Quantico, VA, (1988-1989) the Naval Command and Staff, Naval War College, Newport, RI, (1994-1995), the School of Advanced Warfighting, Quantico, VA, (1995-1996) and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Ft McNair Washington, DC, (2001-2002).

Colonel Stewart’s principal command tours include: Tank Platoon Leader with Company A, 1st Tank (1982-1983) and Executive Officer, Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Tank Battalion (1984-1985) Camp Pendleton, CA; Company Commander with Company I, Marine Support Battalion, Adak, Alaska (1986-1988); Company Commander with Headquarters and Service Company, 2d Radio Battalion (1989-1990); Company Commander with Company E, Marine Support Battalion, Misawa Japan (1992-1994), Commanding Officer, 1st Intelligence Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA. (1999-2001) and Commanding Officer, Headquarters Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC, (2006-2008)

His principal staff assignments include: Project Officer, Light Armored Vehicle, Anti-Tank, Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. (1983-1984); Assistant Signals Intelligence Officer, 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, (1990-1991); Assistant Operations Officer, 2d Radio Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC, (1991-1992); Intelligence Officer, and Chief, Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence, Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force, Experimental, Quantico, VA, (1996-1999); Deputy Director, Intelligence Policy, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, C3I (2001-2002); Deputy G-2, Marine Forces Central Command (2002); Senior Intelligence Planner, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (2002-2005) and Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Marine Corps Forces Command, Norfolk, VA, 2005-2006.

Colonel Stewart’s military decorations include: the Defense Superior Service Medal; the Legion of Merit with one gold star; the Bronze Star; the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star; the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, with two gold stars; the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; the Combat Action Ribbon; and various unit awards.

Colonel Gearhart was born in Alexandria, VA on 27 June 1958.

He attended Broad Run High School in Ashburn, VA and graduated in May 1980 from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (With Distinction).

Colonel Gearhart earned an MS (National Security Strategy) from the National War College in Washington DC, and an MS (Systems Technology) from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.  He also attended the Marine Corps Command & Staff College, Amphibious Warfare School (non-resident), Amphibious Intelligence Officer’s Course, Basic Communication Officer’s Course and The Basic School.

A Marine Corps spouse for over 27 years, Colonel Gearhart’s wife, Ginger, is the Department Head for World Languages at Courtland High School in Spotsylvania, VA.  They’re proud parents of three young adults; Michael, Jessica and Ryan.

Deputy Commander, Marine Corps Systems Command, C4ISR

Mr. Burrow has over twenty years experience in the definition, design, development, integration, test, and operational employment of combat systems and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) systems, and over 15 years experience in technical line and program management.

Mr. Burrow currently serves as the Deputy Commander, C4I Integration, Marine Corps Systems Command. Prior to this assignment, Mr. Burrow served as the Force Warfare Systems Department Head, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), as the Naval Sea Systems Command Technical Area Expert for Surface Ship Combat and Weapon Control Systems, and as the Technical Process Owner for Open Architecture (2004-2006). Mr. Burrow has served as the Program Executive Officer for Integrated Warfare Systems Director of Combat Systems Engineering (2003-2004); the NSWCDD Maritime Defense Division Head, Theater Warfare Systems Department (2001-2003); the Surface Ship and Combat Systems Engineering Division Head, Combat Systems Department (1997-2001); the Navy’s Open Architecture Project Leader (2002-2003); the NSWCDD Program Manager for the 21st Century Surface Combatant (DD 21/ DDG 1000) program (1995-2001); the Technical Director of the Navy’s DD 21 Technical Team (TECH TEAM 21) (1997-2001); and the Principal Instructor and Coordinator of the Surface Ship Combat System Engineering curriculum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Professional Summer for Naval Engineers (1996-1998).

Mr. Burrow is a Certified Level III Acquisition Professional in the Advanced Systems Planning, Research, Development and Engineering (SPRDE) and Program Management (PM) acquisition career fields. Mr. Burrow was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2004.
